Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents as a child due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay instantly became enthralled with an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's model of that art can be an activist vehicle. DuVernay was also taught by her mother with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers DuVernay spent there would later inspire her to write a script for a film based on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay received her graduation certificate at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in university. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage in the house of a member of the jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on to the world of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as a junior publicist at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency.
